Assessment of residential scale renewable heating solutions with thermal energy storages

Thermal energy storage technologies significantly increase the benefits of decentralized renewable production on residential scale. While many studies investigate singular applications thermal storages or provide a broad overview about current state research in this field, there is no comprehensive assessment market-ready solutions. This paper combines system performance analysis for combination photovoltaic and solar generation with based building simulations. Energy systems single- multi-family reference buildings low consumption, representing most common retrofit case Switzerland, are designed equal performance, later evaluated total costs ownership financial payback. The results highlight operational difference storages, where some act more like an source their optimal sizing. Variation input versus size emphasize individual duration.
